Together with Medfield, Prevas nominated for Swedish Embedded Award

For the fourth year in a row, the engineering firm Prevas, a leader within embedded systems and industrial IT, helped produce a product that has been nominated for the Swedish Embedded Award.

Gothenburg-based Medfield Diagnostics has been nominated for the Swedish Embedded Award 2011 in the "Enterprise" category for its patented product concept for diagnosing strokes using microwaves.

Product development for this type of medical instrument requires a lot of resources as well as a large amount of clinical testing. As a first step, Medfield, with Prevas' help, has developed its first medical instrument, Strokefinder R10. Strokefinder R10 was primarily developed for clinical testing of stroke patients, but it can also be used to monitor potential stroke patients.

A stroke that causes a cerebral hemorrhage requires one type of medical treatment, whereas a blood clot in the brain requires a completely different treatment. The problem doctors face involves quickly selecting the right type of measure. Fast and correct treatment reduces the risk of the patient losing speech and mobility.

Medfield's Strokefinder R10 instrument consists of a measurement device and a helmet that is placed on the patient's head. The measurement device is used to examine the brain using microwaves. There are antennas in the helmet that, together with the measurement device, act as transmitters and receivers. The antennas transmit microwaves into the brain from different angles. The measurement results are subsequently analyzed by Medfield's own patent-pending algorithms.

The aim is eventually to equip ambulances with the instruments to enable immediate, correct diagnosis during emergency calls involving stroke. Quick and correct diagnosis enables treatment to be initiated pmuch faster, which leads to reduced or no permanent damage and reduced rehabilitation costs for stroke care as a whole.

Patrik Dahlqvist, CEO Medfield Diagnostics, says:
"Swedish Embedded Award 2011 is very prestigious, and we are happy and honored to be nominated."

Hans Nyström, business unit manager at Prevas in Gothenburg says:
"It is important for start-ups such as Medfield to minimize development work. Using established construction methods such as PXI with finished modules enabled us to minimize development time and thus costs, at the same time that the device can easily be developed to satisfy new needs."

The Embedded Award winners will be announced at Embedded Conference Scandinavia, which will take place at the same time as Scandinavian Technical Fair at the beginning of October. For more information about the Swedish Embedded Award, see www.embeddedpriset.nu.
